1940s Stetson Plastic Felt

This vintage Stetson fedora was made in the mid 1940s. It is made of Stetson’s short lived “Plastic Felt”, a wool blend with a portion made of “Vinyon”. The hat originally sold for $5, and was marketed as being water resistant. The hat is made from four pieces of this miracle felt- the crown sides, the crown top, the brim, and the brim binding, all stitched together like a cloth hat. The hat is stitched for extra strength. It is light brown with an orange ribbon, one of the “Autumn Shades” mentioned in the original advertising. It has an unreeded brown leather sweatband, with the Stetson Plastic Felt logo.

Stetson Moose River

This hat was made by the John B. Stetson company for LL Bean. It is a variation on the classic “Open Road” model, but with a narrower, raw edge. It looks like the original owner followed the marketing and wore it as a rugged outdoorsy type of fedora. As such, the sweatband needs to be replaced.

1950s Stetson Whippet

This vintage fedora hat was made by the John B. Stetson company in the mid 1950s. It is their iconic ” Whippet ” model, with a wide bound brim and a broad ribbon band. It has a brown leather sweatband with the dark style of imprint used briefly by Stetson in the mid 1950s. It is made at the “Royal Stetson” grade, and was sold by Silverwoods of Southern California for an original purchase price of $10.

NRA labeled Miller cowboy hat

This vintage cowboy hat was made in the early 1930s and was sold by Miller of Denver, Colorado. It is NRA (National Recovery Administration) tagged, which dates it manufacture between 1933 to 1935. Under the sweatband is a Lot number, of the type used by Stetson on their sweatbands. Comparing this number to others found on NRA tagged hats places this one on the early end of the 1933-35 spectrum. I addition to hats under their own name, Miller was a large distributer of Stetson hats. With a type of sweatband so far only known to be used by Stetson this could have been produced under license by Stetson for Miller. The reorder tag is of a generic type with no maker’s name, so it’s a bit of a mystery. The hat is marked XXXX quality, and has the gold “Miller Fine Hats Denver Colorado” bucking bronco logo embossed on the leather. The sweatband has a taped rear seam, and appears to have received very little wear.

Stetson Gun Club

this hat was made by the John B. Stetson Company in the mid 1980s. It is made of fur felt, grown soft and pliable through decades of usage. It bears the Gun Club model name, used since the 1950s on a variety of styles. This one has a raw edge brim, and a C-Crown, with a medium width ribbon. The proportions and feel of the hat are very similar to the 1950s Brent “Adventurer” model. The sweatband bears the Stetson crest imprint, oddly the earlier “stars” variant on the design used in the 1950s and before. The sweatband material itself is pure 1980s Stetson.

Dobbs Fifteen

This vintage fedora was made by Dobbs in the 1940s. It is made of high quality fur felt, has a tall crown with a center-dent crease and front pinches, a black ribbon and bow and coral colored brim binding. This hat sold at the fifteen dollar price point, which was at the higher end of the pricing spectrum at the time. The hat has a brown leather sweatband and a cream colored lining. The hat was originally sold by Klee Bros. and Co., Chicago, IL.

Stetson Stratoliner

This vintage fedora was made by the John B. Stetson company in the 1950s. It is their legendary “Stratoliner” model, named after the Boeing 307 Stratoliner airplane. The model was similar to Stetson’s “Open Road”, but with slightly more flange to the brim. While the Open road was marketed with more western iconography, the Stratoliner was sold as a modern, sporty hat. This one was made with fur felt of the “Royal” designation. It has a brown leather sweatband, with Stetson’s 1950s crest. It has a three color liner logo, which indicates a date of manufacture towards the end of the decade. This hat was sold by Cronin-Peterson Men’s Wear of Rochester, Minnesota. It still has the original price tag on the sweatband.

1920s Stetson raw edge homburg

This vintage hat was made in the early 1920s by the John B. Stetson company. It is an interesting transitional style. At the time this was sold, it probably would have been designated as a fedora style – at that point, “fedora” had a broader definition. It has a curled edge brim- the same curl used on Boss Raw Edge westerns of the period – this is the first I’ve seen it on a dress hat like this. With the proportions it has, and its curled brim, today it would be called a homburg or a “Lords Hat”. It has a wide ribbon with a frayed-edge bow. The frayed trailing edge was a popular styling cue on hats of this era. Inside, the hat is unlined. The sweatband stampings indicate that it is a “Select Quality” felt, which sold for $7 in the early 1920s. This made it an expensive hat for the time period. It was sold in Jackson, TN by the G.H. Robertson Co.

1910s Stetson overwelt homburg

This vintage Stetson was made in the 1910s. It is a medium brown fur felt, in a transitional style somewhere between a fedora and a homburg. It has an overwelt brim edge (typical of fedoras), but with a more typically homburg style flange to the brim. There is a wide brown grosgrain ribbon. The trailing edge of the bow has a frayed edge, as was the style of the day.
Inside, the hat has a dark rose colored lining, with gold colored piping, and a detailed “Gold Medal” style imprint. The sweatband is a creamy beige, with a gold embossed Stetson logo, touting their gold medal victories in 1876, 1878, 1889 and 1900. The hat has premier quality felt. It was sold by Jos. Polczynski hatters, 9307 Jos Campau, near Holbrook, Hamtramck, MI. This would later become Henry the Hatter.

7-1/4 1930s Stetson No. 1 quality cowboy hat

This vintage hat was made in the 1930s by the John B. Stetson company. It bears their “No. 1 Quality” designation. The dressweight felt has an unusual rose color. The liner is a complementary pink, with a highly detailed stamp. It was originally sold in Vinita, OK by “The Army Store”.
