1920s Red-Head Brand canvas hunting jacket

This vintage canvas hunting jacket was made in the 1920s by Red Head Brand. It features the early variant of their makers label and of their buttons. The jacket is made of a double layer of canvas, with an internal game pocket (enclosed between the two layers instead of an open, rubberized lined pouch as was found on RedHead coats from the 1930s-on). There is access to the game pocket through internal slit pockets, similar to the access on a half-moon vest. The collar and cuffs are corduroy, and the shoulders have additional reinforcement. The hip cargo pockets are two separate U shaped pockets which share a flap. The breast pocket combines a watch pocket and a cigarette pocket, again under the same flap. There are grommet ventilated double underarm gussets for freedom of motion, and a throat latch hook and eye under the collar.

Early 1930s mackinaw Stag Coat

This vintage mackinaw coat was made in the early 1930s. At the time of its manufacture, this single breasted plaid mackinaw style, with its A-1 style patch pockets and shirt collar, was known as a Stag Coat. It has a double yoke back for a bit of extra warmth, and like many early mackinaws, is unlined.

1930s belt back Hart Schaffner & Marx overcoat

This vintage overcoat was made between 1936 and 1938 by Hart Schaffner & Marx and was sold in Bozeman, Montana by Wagner Brothers. It is an extremely rare cut, single breasted, with a belted back. Usually on overcoats these belt-back treatments were reserved for double breasted models. The coat is gray with a subtle plaid. It is half-lined, as was common in the era. The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union tag is a rare 1936 variant, which narrows the dating down hugely, as it was replaced by a new tag design in 1939.

1940s brown herringbone tweed overcoat

This vintage overcoat was made in the 1940s. It bears a 1939 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union tag, placing the dating between 1939 and 1949. The coat is made from bold brown herringbone tweed. It is single breasted, with wide notch lapels and flapped patch pockets. The coat is half-lined, as was typical in this era.

Reversible Tweed and Moleskin coat

This vintage jacket was made in England in the late 1950s-1960s. It is a car coat length and is reversible, herringbone tweed on one side and camel colored moleskin on the other. Each side has handwarmer pockets, and leather loops at the collar for doing the shawl collar up around the neck. It has double vents.

1947-1948 Lakeland Wagonwheel Jackinac XL

These Lakeland Wagonwheel Jackinac jackets were advertised heavily in 1947 and 1948, and appeared in Life Magazine. It is a twist on the classic red and black Hudson’s Bay point blanket style. It has a five button front. There is a zipped breast pocket, and shirt style cuffs. The zipper is an early style Talon chain zipper. The jacket is unlined and has taped seams. There is a nice recurrence of the stripe pattern on the underside of the collar.

1930s Woolrich 255 hunting mackinaw

This vintage jacket was made in the mid to late 1930s by the Woolrich Woolen Mills of Woolrich, PA. This is the rare 255 model, with a double front yoke, handwarmers with D-pocket stitching and flapped cargo pockets. It has exposed buttons and a rear game pouch. The coat, in keeping with many early mackinaw coats, is unlined.

Red 1950s-1960s Skookum hunting cruiser jacket

This vintage jacket was made in the late 1950s-1960s by the Centralia Knitting Mills of Centralia Washington for Harold Kaufman under the Skookum Sportswear label. It is made of heavy red mackinaw fabric in a four pocket, caped pattern, with front snaps. Due to the heavy weight of the material, the coat is unlined.

1960s red Woolrich 511 Mackinaw coat

This vintage woolrich coat was made in the early 1960s in Woolrich, Pennsylvania. It is the 511 model, the red version of the 503, which was introduced around the turn of the century.. This version has the later symmetrical breast pockets, and Woolrich branded snaps.

1930s H.W. Carter & Sons red and black point blanket mackinaw coat

This vintage jacket was made by H.W. Carter & Sons of Lebanon, New Hampshire in the mid 1930s. It is made of heavy red and black point blanket material, in a single breasted mackinaw style. Unusual for a point blanket coat, this example has a game pocket, which does up with two early Hookless-style Talon zippers. The coat has a zipper hood which snaps down into a collar. The hood zips open and closed with a Talon zipper, the design of which dates this jacket to c.1937. The coat bears a United Garment Workers of America union label, as well as a black and yellow tag identifying the material as water repellent and all wool. The jacket is fully lined in mustard colored cotton, similar to what Woolrich was using on their hunting coats in this period, especially in its use of a single patch breast pocket. The mackinaw has snap closure cargo pockets as well as handwarmers.
