1920s Red-Head Brand canvas hunting jacket

This vintage canvas hunting jacket was made in the 1920s by Red Head Brand. It features the early variant of their makers label and of their buttons. The jacket is made of a double layer of canvas, with an internal game pocket (enclosed between the two layers instead of an open, rubberized lined pouch as was found on RedHead coats from the 1930s-on). There is access to the game pocket through internal slit pockets, similar to the access on a half-moon vest. The collar and cuffs are corduroy, and the shoulders have additional reinforcement. The hip cargo pockets are two separate U shaped pockets which share a flap. The breast pocket combines a watch pocket and a cigarette pocket, again under the same flap. There are grommet ventilated double underarm gussets for freedom of motion, and a throat latch hook and eye under the collar.

1930s Sam Stark half-belt

This jacket was made in the late 1930s-early 1940s and was sold in Cheyenne, Wyoming by Sam Stark. The jacket is a waist length, button front half-belt cossack style, with handwarmer pockets and side adjuster belts. The original buttons probably would have been brown bakelite or corozo, but were replaced sometime in the 1940s with metal military Wyoming state seal buttons. The backs of these buttons are marked “Superior Quality”. The cuffs do up with snap-belt adjusters. Inside one of the pockets I found an empty pack of Kool cigarettes with a 1944 copyright and a series 120 Dewitt Clinton tax stamp, dating the pack to 1950, and also helping set a probable date for the last time this jacket was worn.

1960s red Woolrich 511 Mackinaw coat

This vintage woolrich coat was made in the early 1960s in Woolrich, Pennsylvania. It is the 511 model, the red version of the 503, which was introduced around the turn of the century.. This version has the later symmetrical breast pockets, and Woolrich branded snaps.

Ralph Lauren Suede Half-belt leather jacket

This jacket was made by Ralph Lauren under the Polo label. It is made of brown suede leather in style heavily influenced by 1930s half-belt cossack work jackets. The jacket is zipper front, with a straight front yoke, and handwarmer pockets. The back is belted with side adjuster belts. The jacket has a tartan lining. With a 52″ chest, this would best fit someone in the size 46-48 range.

This jacket was made by Ralph Lauren under the Polo label. It was made in the USA from black wool in a 1930s half-belt cossack work jacket style. The jacket is zipper front, with handwarmer pockets and a zipper breast pocket. The back is belted and yoked with side adjuster belts. The jacket is unlined. With a 50″ chest, this would best fit someone in the size 44-46 range.

1920s TW Stevenson leather lined shawl collar mackinaw coat

This vintage mackinaw coat was made in the 1920s by the TW Stevenson Mfg. Co of Minneapolis. Stevenson was a producer of mackinaw coats and leather jackets from the late 1800s through the 1930s. The company was headquartered at 416 N. 1st Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
This coat is an early-style shawl collared mackinaw. It is double breasted, belted, with patch pockets and is constructed from heavy brown mackinaw wool. The coat is fully leather lined, body and sleeves. Such leather linings were popular in the 1910s-1920s as a windproof layer in outdoor / workwear coats. Starting in the late 1920s, leather became a more a more popular material for coat exteriors, and the popularity of the position wool and leather switched. The coat has the name Walter Sternitzke written in the lining, though the coat was probably originally purchased by his father, Reinhold Sternizke, a farmer from the town of Aitkin, Minnesota.

1940s Taylor’s California Desert Suedes capeskin leather vest

This vintage vest was made in the mid-late 1940s by Taylors of California out of russet colored capeskin. Despite being made of smooth leather, it bears the “Desert Suedes” label. It is a high-cut zip front vest, with size vent zips on the hips. There are handwarmer pockets as well as semi-concealed chest pockets in the front yoke seam. The vest has a plaid lining and salt-and-pepper pocket linings. The zipper, with its square holed slider and Talon branded stopbox help date this jacket to the years immediately after WWII, somewhere in the 1945-1949 range.

Captoe dress boots

This vintage pair of boots is typical of dress boots of the 1920s, although the heels and overall construction make me think they were manufactured in the 1940s. They remained popular at that point with older, more conservative markets. They are made of black leather with five eyelets and four speed hooks. They have black flat cotton laces, and a nice curve to the back seam. The boots have Vulcan rubber heels and a leather sole.

Hettrick American Field Half Moon hunting fishing vest

This vintage vest was made in the 1940s by the Hettrick Mfg. Co. of Toldeo, Ohio. It is what is now known as a “half-moon” style, named after its round game pocket access on the front. This vest was intended for flyfishers, and has a fly rod loop to hold your rod and a multitude of pockets. It is made of khaki colored canvas.
