Ralph Lauren Reproduction suede leather A-1 jacket

This jacket, made by Ralph Lauren under the Polo label, draws heavy design influence from the leather “windbreaker” jackets of the 1920s which evolved into the A-1 flight jacket. Many of these early jackets were made of lightweight leathers, suede or capeskin. Separable bottom zippers were not invented until 1927, and didn’t go into production until early 1930, so jackets of the 1920s had button fronts. In this period, knit collars, cuffs and waistbands were popular. These jackets were originally marketed toward the sporting market: golfers, hunters, outdoorsmen. This short style would come to be adopted by civilian aviators, as it was far less clumsy than the full length coats of the WWI period.

The jacket is made of brown suede. It has a full wool tartan lining.

WWII German theatre made USAAF A-2 leather flight jacket

This vintage A-2 leather flight jacket was made in the 1940s, either at the end of the war or during occupation. A-2s ceased to be produced in 1943, but remained popular with servicemen. Theatre made examples like this are rare, but were commissioned by Americans who wanted a jacket that was no longer available through official channels. It is made to the A-2 pattern, with a shirt style collar secured by snaps, flapped, snapped patch pockets, knit cuffs and collar, and a zipper front with a wind flap. The jacket has a one piece back and two piece sleeves. The jacket has war-time German hardware, with a Zipp main zipper (with the back marked DRP, which stands for Deutschers ReichsPatent, and points to a 1945 or before dating of manufacture of the zipper). All the snaps are PRYM brand. The jacket is lined with a typically German plaid, which has been heavily worn and has been patched.

1930s fringed deerskin leather cossack jacket

This vintage leather jacket was made in Mexico. This waist length, button front, leather waistbanded style with triangular side panels, patch pockets and side adjuster belts was popular in the early 1930s. This was the original cossack style jacket before the half-belt back models took over. As was typical of many early leather jackets, this one is unlined. It is marked a size 36 in pen but measures smaller, probably originally worn by a teen.

1940s Kit Karson Indian Scout goatskin leather half-belt cossack jacket

This vintage leather jacket was made in the late 1940s by Kit Karson Indian Scout sportswear. It is made of goatskin, in a half-belt cossack jacket style. The distinctive pleats of the pocket conceal handwarmers with the flapped cargo pockets. The jacket has a pin lock bell shaped Conmar zipper.

Reversible Tweed and Moleskin coat

This vintage jacket was made in England in the late 1950s-1960s. It is a car coat length and is reversible, herringbone tweed on one side and camel colored moleskin on the other. Each side has handwarmer pockets, and leather loops at the collar for doing the shawl collar up around the neck. It has double vents.

1930s capeskin belted leather jacket

This vintage leather jacket was made around 1937 from pig-grain textured russet capeskin leather. The jacket is single breasted and belted, with caramel colored corozo buttons and distinctive semi-raglan shoulders. The jacket is fully lined.

This jacket was made by Ralph Lauren under the Polo label. It is made of brown suede leather in style heavily influenced by 1930s half-belt cossack work jackets. The jacket is zipper front, with a straight front yoke, and handwarmer pockets. The back is belted with side adjuster belts. The jacket has a tartan lining. With a 52″ chest, this would best fit someone in the size 46-48 range.

This jacket was made by Ralph Lauren under the Polo label. It was made in the USA from black wool in a 1930s half-belt cossack work jacket style. The jacket is zipper front, with handwarmer pockets and a zipper breast pocket. The back is belted and yoked with side adjuster belts. The jacket is unlined. With a 50″ chest, this would best fit someone in the size 44-46 range.

Early 1930s money belt with Kwik Zipper

This vintage money belt was made in the early 1930s. It is made of leather, with a snapped pocket, and a larger zipped pouch. The zipper is an early 1930s Kwik, made under patents no. 1814244, granted in 1931, patent no. 1752111, granted in 1930 and 1761385, granted in 1930. The snap is an early United Carr and the buckle has a nicely detailed design. The puller on the pin-lock Kwik is obviously influenced by Hookless zips of the same era.

1940s Taylor’s California Desert Suedes capeskin leather vest

This vintage vest was made in the mid-late 1940s by Taylors of California out of russet colored capeskin. Despite being made of smooth leather, it bears the “Desert Suedes” label. It is a high-cut zip front vest, with size vent zips on the hips. There are handwarmer pockets as well as semi-concealed chest pockets in the front yoke seam. The vest has a plaid lining and salt-and-pepper pocket linings. The zipper, with its square holed slider and Talon branded stopbox help date this jacket to the years immediately after WWII, somewhere in the 1945-1949 range.
