Montgomery Ward Columbia

This vintage western hat was made in the 1910s or 1920s, and was sold by Montgomery Ward. This style was called the “Columbia” by various manufacturers and was a popular western style at the time.

It is made of black fur felt, with a pencil curled brim, and a narrow ribbon with a western style bow. It has a tall crown, creased with a center dent and front pinches, though the felt is such that it can easily be re-creased as you so choose. The hat is unlined and has a brown leather sweatband, embossed with an early Montgomery Ward crest. The reorder tag, indicating the hat is a size 7, is of a generic style and doesn’t offer many clues as to who made the hat for Montgomery Ward.

Rand’s Custom 8x beaver cowboy hat

This hat was custom made by Rand’s Custom Hatters of Billings, Montana in 1989. It has a pencil curled brim and a shallow Gus crease. It is made in their 8X beaver felt.

Akubra Drover

This hat was made by Akubra, probably in the 1980s. It is a wide brim slouch style, with a bound brim, grommets in the side of the crown, and a low teardrop crease. It is unlined, and has a narrow leather sweatband.

JC Penney straw cowboy hat

This vintage straw hat was made in the late 1960s- 1970s and was sold by JC Penney. Penney’s was known for their hats, formerly retailing their store brand “Marathon” hats. This one is made simply under the JCPenney label. It is made of straw with an open weave, and blocked with a squared off cattleman’s crease. The sweatband, as was the case of many straw hats of the period, is an imitation leather, and has hardened, but is still in solid condition, with no cracking. The hat looks like it was barely ever worn, a rarity for straws like this.

Bailey B Bar B Cowboy Hat

This vintage cowboy hat was made in the mid to late 1950s by Bailey hats under their “B Bar B” western line. It is made of high quality 3X fur felt. Please remember that the X rating system has inflated grossly over the past half-century, and varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. This is very nice felt. It is trimmed with a two cord band, and has a raw edge brim. The hat has a brown leather sweatband, stamped with the Bailey logo. It was sold in Bozeman, Montana by Wagner’s.

Stetson Stratoliner

This vintage fedora was made by the John B. Stetson company in the 1950s. It is their legendary “Stratoliner” model, named after the Boeing 307 Stratoliner airplane. The model was similar to Stetson’s “Open Road”, but with slightly more flange to the brim. While the Open road was marketed with more western iconography, the Stratoliner was sold as a modern, sporty hat. This one was made with fur felt of the “Royal” designation. It has a brown leather sweatband, with Stetson’s 1950s crest. It has a three color liner logo, which indicates a date of manufacture towards the end of the decade. This hat was sold by Cronin-Peterson Men’s Wear of Rochester, Minnesota. It still has the original price tag on the sweatband.

Blue Resistol cowboy hat

This cowboy hat, made by Restistol, probably in the 1980s, is very close to the classic cowboy hats of the 1920s and 1930s, with its tall crown, Tom Mix crease, and pencil curl brim edge. It is a navy blue fur felt, with a two cord hat band. It was sold by “The Maverick”. with locations in Tempe, Chandler and Casa Grande Arizona. The model is the “Tempe Diablos”, presumably made for members of the charity.

1920s Alexander Cowboy Hat

This vintage cowboy hat was made by the G.W. Alexander hat company of Reading, PA. However, at least some of the components of the hat are sourced from the John B. Stetson company of Philadelphia, PA. The sweatband bears the Stetson Lot number 6378. At points in their history, Stetson owned the Alexander Hat Company, so this could explain this sharing. The hat is a classic 1920s style, with a high crown, pencil curl brim and a Tom Mix crease. It has a wide grosgrain ribbon, a good quality fur felt body and a wide leather sweatband, which is still supple and in excellent condition. The hat was sold in Lompoc, California by Arthur Randolph. At the time, Lompoc was primarily a mining town. The hat is in very good condition, and in the many 1920s westerns I’ve sold, I would single this one out as the best of the bunch.

Cowpuncher’s Palace

This cowboy hat was made, probably in the 1980s for Cowpuncher’s Palace of Decatur, GA. It feels like a hatco product of the time. It is black, heavily stiffened, long nap 7X beaver fur felt, and is a 7-1/8 long oval. The hatband is missing. The hat has a gus / tom mix crease.
