1940s horsehide half-belt leather jacket

This vintage leather jacket was made in the 1940s or 1950s. Its heavy leather feels like horsehide, but there are no tags. It has acquired an incredible patina to the leather, originally a dark seal color. The main zip is a Scovill, but it is missing teeth and the slider, so it will need to be replaced. The jacket is a very clean design, with a shirt style collar, handwarmer pockets and a zipped breast pocket. The rear has a halfbelt with adjuster belts. Incredible grain and mismatched panels, each having taken on a unique character over the years. The jacket is lined in khaki cotton, and has no remaining tags. There is a small hole in the leather by the breast pocket, and places (shoulders, cuff, sleeve) where seams need to be re-stitched. The leather is still strong, however, and has not worn through in the collar and cuffs like you would expect to see.

Shawl Collar army mackinaw

I feel that the shawl collared officer’s Mackinaw is one of the best looking, most practical coats to have come out of WWII. I’ve sold two so far, one by the Progressive Clothing Mfg. Co. (full post), the other a custom job for Captain H. W. Largent of Presque Isle, Maine (full post).  I have a spot on repro done in the ’60s by Lakeland in bright red wool, and three more originals that I should be listing next week.  The design was essentially a civilian one, a holdover from a style popular in the ’20s for wool outdoors and hunting coats, like the ones seen in this post. I believe the original pattern from which this coat evolved was an m1926.

This vintage shawl collar mackinaw was custom tailored during WWII for an army officer. It has a wide shawl collar, epaulettes, a double breasted front and flapped patch pockets. The coat is fully lined.

Hooded Woolrich jacket

This vintage Woolrich coat has really great detailing. It has a brass Talon zipper front, with a buttoned wind flap. It is fully belted, with a chunky metal belt buckle. The handwarmer pockets close with brass talon zippers, and have leather reinforcements at the ends. The pocket trim forms the belt loops in the tradition of norfolk jackets. The front patch pockets are of the saddlebag variety, allowing them to expand when used. The coat has a hood, and a full sherpa lining, with quilted nylon in the sleeves. It is tagged a size 46, but with the 46″ chest measurement, fits like a size 42.

Cotler workwear jacket

This vintage jacket was made in the 1980s by Cotler. It is heavily influenced by designs of the 1930s, with its belted back and pleated pockets, and its leather jacket influenced side buckles. It is tagged a size 44.

WWII 10 button peacoat

This vintage peacoat was issued during WWII. It has the ten button front, with corduroy pockets, and is made of kersey wool. It is missing one of the front buttons (easily sourced), and one has been re-sewn at some point with red thread. It is marked with the original owner’s name, Campbell, and is missing the original tag.

Ponderosa Shirt Jacket

Woolrich Hunting Mackinaw Jacket

There were a lot of companies producing these hunting jackets, but for me, Woolrich is the iconic one.  That giant rounded collar, the button front.  Simple and rugged.  One served me well in the pouring rain of Alaska and against the Canadian maritime wind.  It’s hard to find one in mint condition.  These were not fashion, they were utilitarian pieces, used for decades, until there was nothing left.  Tears and repairs are the norm.  Woodsmoke and rain a way of life.  This one is the short version, less commonly seen than the four pocket version.

This vintage hunting mackinaw was made by the Woolrich Woolen Mills.  It is their short, zip up pattern, which features two breast pockets, two slash handwarmer pockets, and a large rear game pouch.  This one bears patches from Pennsylvania hunting groups.  Chest (pit to pit): 21″Shoulder to Shoulder: 17-1/2″Sleeve (Shoulder to cuff): 23″    Photobucket

Plaid wool vest

This gap vest has a great vintage influenced style.  It has a wool plaid shell, with suede gun patches on the shoulders and a four button front.  The vest has a half belt, bi-swing action back, a detail borrowed from vintage leather jackets.  In light of the lack of sleeves, it isn’t super useful other than as a design element, however.  The front of the vest has handwarmer pockets, the bottom of which form the flaps for the cargo pockets.Chest: 23″    Photobucket

Aero Duxback hunting jacket

This vintage hunting jacket was made in Utica, New York by Duxback.  It is marked Aero Rainproof Sportsman’s Clothing.  It has a three pocket front, with saddlebag patch pockets.  It has an action back, with a belt. There are under sleeve gussets.  There are scalloped snap closure pocket flaps to access the interior game pocket. The rubberized lining of the game pocket has hardened an is cracking.  Inside, there are two large breast pockets.  All snaps are United Carr. It is tagged a size 44.
