Reproduction Shawl Collar Mackinaw

This coat is a recent reproduction of a style of Mackinaw coat which was popular from the early 1910s through to the 1930s. This style of coat started out with lumberjacks in the pacific northwest at the turn of the century. It broke into mainstream fashion starting around 1912, and was quickly adopted by the collegiate crowd. Workmen and railroad men quickly saw the practicality of its collar and short length and adopted the style.

This reproduction is made of heavyweight black herringbone knit cotton, with a fleeced backing. Like many originals, it is unlined, but the fleeced interior of the fabric makes for a very comfortable jacket. It has a broad shawl collar, and four flapped patch pockets. It is single breasted. There are button adjusters at the wrists.

North Country Lacrosse WI curling club jacket

This vintage jacket was made in the mid 1940s by North Country Outdoor Wear – styled by Klinkerfues Bros Co, St. Paul, MN. It is a green and white plaid, with a brass Talon zipper front. There are buttoned breast pockets and handwarmer pockets. The jacket has shirt style cuffs and is unlined. The shoulder has patches from the Lacrosse Curling Club. The owner was Tri-state champ in 1947 and 1948. The jacket has a pin from the 1939 Indoor Outdoor Skating Championships, LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

These Lakeland Wagonwheel Jackinac jackets were advertised heavily in 1947 and 1948, and appeared in Life Magazine. It is a twist on the classic red and black Hudson’s Bay point blanket style. It has a five button front, though the bottom button is missing. There is a zipped breast pocket, and shirt style cuffs. The jacket is unlined and has taped seams. There is a nice recurrence of the stripe pattern on the underside of the collar.

Powr-House shawl collar mackinaw

This vintage shawl collar mackinaw was made under Montgomery Ward’s workwear label, Powr-House. This style was popular from the 1930s-1950s and the style remained basically unchanged during that time. It has a cotton shell, with a mouton collar and sheepskin lining. There are leather reinforcements at the corners of the pockets, and a throat latch under the shawl collar. The label and the quilted material in the sleeves make me think this is probably a ’50s version of the coat- earlier ones, while nearly identical on the exterior, would likely have had blanket wool linings in the sleeves. There is some light colored staining to the mouton collar, and at the bottom of the coat, some light colored staining, which cleaning has not been able to remove. The coat is labeled in the pocket as a size 42.

Soo Woolen Mills plaid hunting coat

This vintage hunting coat was made by Soo Woolen mills. It is a later variant on the ’30s Soo mackinaw I’m also selling, and while detailing changed over the years, that distinctive collar is still present.

Midwest Outerwear plaid hunting coat

This vintage hunting coat was made by Midwest Outerwear in the 1970s. It has a red taped Talon main zipper, and a nylon toothed chain pull zip on the pocket. The jacket has been heavily worn, with tears to the lining, staining.

Wimbledon WWII army officer’s shawl collar mackinaw

This vintage officer’s mackinaw was custom tailored by Wimbledon from fine kersey wool. It has a large shawl collar, epaulettes and a belt. There are wide differences example to example when it comes to these mackinaws- this one has the quilted liner, a square-ended belt, slightly larger buttons and no sleeve adjuster tabs.

1942 Shawl Collar army officer’s mackinaw

This vintage army officer’s shawl collar mackinaw was issued in 1942. It was made by the ambiguous “Mfr. 478″ and issued by the Philadelphia quartermaster’s depot. If features a pointed end belt, a plain liner, and no sleeve adjuster tabs. The belt loops are positioned on the front of the coat, whereas on the other examples I am currently selling they are positioned further back.

Penney’s Hunting Jacket

This vintage coat was made in the early 1960s by Penney’s. It has a brass talon zipper front, with red zipper tape, a wide collar, and a plaid lining. There are two flapped front pockets, and a game pouch.

This vintage coat is a classic workwear style, the shawl collar mackinaw. It has a canvas shell, with zipped breast pockets, cargo pockets, and leather buttons. The buttons are particularly unusual, as they are square as opposed to the usual round ones. The breast pocket zippers are Astro brand. The coat has a zip in shearling liner. Lining zips are also Astro brand, larger than the pocket zips. The coat was made by Zecron International – world wide weatherproof.
