Snakeskin Florsheim Shoes

Now on eBay!  LINK

These vintage shoes were made by Florsheim in the 1970s.  They are an exotic snakeskin print leather (read- not actually snakeskin).  Open lacing, plain toes, three eyelets.  The laces are mismatched, but finding a new set isn’t very hard.  These shoes were worn, and show wear to the heels and soles, and creasing to the leather, but they still  have a lot of life in them.Size: 8E    Photobucket

Exotic Dack’s Shoes

Now on eBay!  LINK

These vintage shoes were made by famed Canadian shoemaker, Dack’s.  Dack’s was later bought out by Church’s, but I believe these are pre buy out.  Dack’s as really big into the exotic hides.  Camel, ox, you name an an animal, they probably made a shoe out of it.  These aren’t marked as to what the leather is, but it sure is distinctive.  Heels are Biltrite, soles marked “Custom Grade”.Size: 8-1/2 D    Photobucket

LL Bean Boots – a Review

I bought this pair of Bean boots almost four years ago, trying to find a way of combating the winter in Halifax, Nova Scotia. For those of you who haven’t been to Halifax in the winter- it’s a big slushy mess. It snows one day, rains the next and freezes the day after that. It’s a constant cycle of slush, ice, sand and salt. It will soak you to the bone and ruin all but the hardiest footwear. As a student in Halifax, without a car, I walked, a lot. So poorly fitting rubber boots just weren’t going to cut it. I needed something warm, waterproof and comfortable.

These Bean boots fit the bill. These have a goretex and thinsulate lining and they’ve kept me plenty warm and dry. The rubber has kept the salt from destroying anything and the leather uppers ensure a good, comfy fit.

I’ve run the heels and soles down, so it’s about time for them to go back to Maine for a rebuild. Some of the stitching is wearing as well, but since Bean will resole them for a “reasonable cost”, I would think four years in their life is just beginning.

Color and Pattern Coordination

Blue striped suiting, gray felt hat with black band, black shoes, contrasting tie. Conservative 1930s attire.
Photobucket

A wild brown tweed like this calls for brown shoes and a brown hat. Both the shoes and the hat have good chunky proportions, going with the boldness of the tweed. The blue tie harmonizes with the blue overcheck. Keep the tie pattern small so that it does not compete with the tweed. A ’40s country look.

Blue houndstooth with a bit of reddish brown in it. Brown shoes. Brown hat, with a reddish band. Red tie. Early ’60s out and about.
