1950s Windward plaid mackinaw coat

This vintage mackinaw coat was made in the early 1950s for Montgomery Ward and was sold under their Windward Outdoor Clothing label. It is made of red, black and gray plaid mackinaw cloth, with a half-belt back and button on front belt. It bears a 1949 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union label, and a Windward label before the inclusion of the (R) symbol, which, combined with the quilted lining and subtle details, put the dating solidly in the early 1950s. The overall style of the coat from the outside is nearly unchanged from its first wave of popularity around 1935.

1950s Harley Davidson Cycle Champ D-Pocket leather motorcycle jacket

This vintage jacket was made in the 1950s and was sold by Harley Davidson Motor Cycles. It is made of genuine Front Quarter Steerhide leather. The jacket has an asymmetrical motorcycle jacket cut, with a D pocket, zipped breast pocket, zipped side pockets, open zip cuffs and epaulettes. The ends of all the pockets are trimmed and reinforced with four nickel studs. That is doubled on the epaulettes. The jacket has a quilted lining, and Serval zippers throughout. It bears a 1949 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union label of the variant used from 1949-1962. The jacket is a dark seal brown.

1930s Sportclad hunting coat

This vintage jacket was made in the 1930s, and was sold by the J.C. Penney Company under their Sportclad label. It is made of red and black plaid wool mackinaw fabric with flapped cargo pockets, handwarmer pockets, a zipped rear entry to the internal game pocket, and leather reinforcement at the corners of these pockets. The zippers are early Talon, with bell-shaped pullers. The deco lines on the pull of the zipper put the date of manufacture around 1937. The jacket is fully lined, and has a trimmed throat latch.

1930s shawl collar mackinaw

This vintage coat was made by the Fechheimer Bros Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. It bears a 1930s United Garment Workers of America union label in the rare small size. I’ve had a number of these shawl collar mackinaws, and from maker to maker there were a number of subtle variations from the stock pattern. This one is truly special, with unique pointed, buttoned patch pockets, epaulettes of an unusual design, and a high button stance. Typical for the 1930s production of these coats, commonly worn as fall/ winter workwear by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps, this one is unlined with finished seams.

Allen Cowboy Suit

This vintage suit was made by the Allen Mfg. Co of Denver Colorado in 1963. This style of western suit, with its wide peak lapels and squared cutaway emerged on the western fashion scene just after WWII, a “greatest hits” collection of all the wildest detailing of prewar suits- the razor sharp peak lapels, the bi-swing shoulders, the saddlebag pockets. The style stayed virtually unchanged through the 1950s. In the early 1960s, it fell out of favor for suddenly extremely narrow notch lapels and different detailing. It’s surprising to see such a late date in a suit of this style. Also interesting is that this suit does not have the yoked western style back commonly associated with this style. The pants have subtle western scalloping to the pockets, wide belt loops and are cuffless.

1960s Dobbs West Fifty

This vintage hat was made by Dobbs, as part of their Dobbs West line of cowboy hats. It is a beaver 50, which means that at the time of its manufacture, in the 1960s, it was a fifty dollar hat, making it extremely up-market. It is a size 7.

1952 Canadian battledress pants

These vintage pants were made by the Maritime Pant Mfg. Co Ltd. on July 25, 1952 for the Canadian Navy. They are marked size 15, for a height between 5’11” and 6′ with a waist between 37-38 inches and a breech between 43-44″. They are marked with the broad arrow.

Waist (side to side): 18-1/2″ (doubled = 37″)
Outseam: 45″
Inseam: 31″
Rise: 14″

Vanson Leathers bones chaps

These chaps were made by Vanson Leathers of Boston, MA. They are made of heavyweight cowhide with stitched leather bones. They have single piece legs with full length zippers, a seven snap front, and an adjustable lace up back. Vanson sizes their chaps by thigh size, these are tagged a 23″ thigh.

Minimum waist (side to side): 17″, doubled = 34″. Remember that this measurement should be taken overtop your pants, and that with the lace up back, these can adjust as large as needed.
Outseam: 41″

Vanson Leathers bones gloves

These gloves were made by Vanson Leathers from heavyweight cowhide and have a stitched leather bones pattern. They are Vanson’s “Rocket” model, with a zipped cuff. They have the Vanson tag, Vanson embossed logo on the cuff and Vanson branded zippers. They are a size Large.

This jacket was made in the USA by Vanson leathers of Boston, MA. It is the “Bones” version of their biker style jacket, in heavyweight black cowhide leather, with stitched white leather bones. It has the quilted, Vanson branded lining, and Vanson branded zippers.
