1930s Woolrich full zip shirt

This vintage shirt was made around 1936-1938 by Woolrich. It is made from red and black plaid wool from the Woolrich Woolen Mills of Woolrich, PA and has an unusual full zipper design with a single buttonhole on the tails. The zipper is a Talon, with sunburst stopbox, oval slider-to-pull connector and sunburst slider. In typical workshirt form, this has two buttoned breast pockets.

This vintage shirt was made in the 1930s in Merrill, Wisconsin by the Merrill Woolen Mills. It is made of red and black wool, with a two-button extended stand collar chinstrap. It has a half-length placket, long tails and two breast pockets.

This vintage shirt was made in the late 1930s by the Woolrich Woolen Mills of Woolrich PA. It bears the variant of label which was used briefly in that period. It is a half-zip style, with a Talon zipper with a rectangular hole slider and a Talon marked slider/pull connector, a variant of zip used in the late 1930s. It is a size 15-1/2.

1910s-1920s pullover workshirt

This vintage shirt was made in the late 1910s- mid 1920s. It is made of red wool, in a pullover style, with a convertible collar and buttoned breast pockets. This style of convertible collar, designed to be worn either buttoned up, or worn spread for a look similar to the lumberjack jackets of the time, was briefly popular on workshirts in this time frame. The shirt has a bold reinforcement panel, stitched so that it doubles as a small third pocket.

1930s J.O. Ballard chinstrap workshirt

This vintage shirt was made by the J.O. Ballard woolen mills of Malone, New York. It is made of a red and green plaid. It has flapped breast pockets, a chinstrap (extension collar stand) and vertical keyhole buttonholes.
J.O. Ballard was founded in 1888 by Jay Olin Ballard, and traded alternately under the J.O Ballard name and the name, Malone Woolen Mills. The company began making wool outdoorsman’s breeches in 1891 and followed up with mackinaw coats like this one. They were famous for their Malone plaid- gray with red and green overchecks. Coats of this cut were advertised to hunters, hikers, mountain climbers, lumberjacks, workmen and all other stripes of outdoorsmen. The depression closed the company in 1933. It re-opened again in 1935 with the assistance of an Reconstruction Finance Corporation loan, a depression era loan program.

This workshirt was made between 2004 and 2013 by Ralph Lauren as part of their now defunct Rugby line. The style is influenced by Big Yank work shirts of the 1930s. It has a chinstrap collar stand, embroidered ventilation eyelets, vintage style buttons, buttoned breast pockets, Ralph Lauren’s take on a vintage union label and U shaped reinforcement yokes.

1930s NRA tagged Chippewa chinstrap work shirt

This vintage shirt was made in Wisconsin between 1933 and 1935 by the Chippewa Falls Woolen Mill under the Chippewa label. It is made of red and black wool, with long tails, buttoned breast pockets, and a extension tab or ” chinstrap ” collar stand. These shirts were popular workwear during the fall and winter months. The shirt bears a NRA Cotton Code (National Recovery Act) tag, which helps date it within a three year span.

Chinstrap WWII Army Shirt

This vintage shirt was made in the 1940s. it has two chest pockets one with a pencil pocket, double button cuffs and epaulettes. It has a chinstrap collar stand, a detail common on workshirts of the 1920s-1930s. The maker of this shirt likely was primarily a maker of those workshirts before being awarded the contract to make this one for the Army.

1930s Big Yank chinstrap workshirt

This vintage workshirt was made by famed workwear manufacturer, Big Yank, in the 1930s. The shirt has an extended, double button collar stand, now known as a chinstrap. There are two spacious, flapped breast pockets. Seams are triple stitched. Shoulders are reinforced, as are the elbows. The tails are gusseted. The blue chambray versions of this style were popular in the summer, while wool versions, like this one, were worn in the winter. There is the remains of a Dewitt Clinton Cigarette tax stamp in one of the pockets, possibly series 108 from 1938
