1920s-1930s Flexedge overcoat

This vintage overcoat was made in the late 1920s-early 1930s. It if made with Flex-Edge construction, which was patented March 24, 1925 and consists of the seams being folded back past the edge and sewn flat. The tag advertises it as having “no thick clumsy seams, and tailored to stay tailored”. The coat is double breasted, with horizontal, round edged peak lapels, a breast pocket and flapped hip pockets. The coat has a belted back and is half-lined.

1940s Dureghan Longwear overcoat

This vintage overcoat was made in the 1940s by the New Process Company of Warren, Pennsylvania under the LongWear label of Dureghan 100% Wool fabric, with a luxurious nap. It is single breasted and half-lined.

1920s herringbone tweed Regency House overcoat

This vintage overcoat was made in the 1920s-1930s by Regency House of London and New York. It was styled in Golden Square, London, and was sold by Carson Pirie Scott & Company, a high end department store based in Wisconsin. It is made in an extremely bold black and white herringbone tweed, with raglan shoulders, broad lapels, a plain back and button adjuster cuffs. It is half-lined, as was typical of overcoats of this period. There is an internal breast pocket, a smaller pocket, and a button on throat latch for cold weather.

1920s Sheuerman mackinaw coat

This vintage mackinaw coat was made by Sheuerman Bros of Des Moines, Iowa. It is double breasted, with broad lapels, patch pockets and a buttoned belt. The coat is gray with a subtle overcheck. As is typical of mackinaw coats of this era, it is unlined. The construction appears that there was a vent that has been closed, possibly the coat was shortened. The label is typically 1920s, with a black background and yellow lettering. Sheuerman’s slogan was “from sheep to shape”.

1950s Lazarus single breasted overcoat

This vintage coat was made in the early 1950s for the F & R Lazarus Company of Columbus, Ohio. It is single breasted, with a three button front, raglan shoulders and handwarmer pockets. It is made in a muted plaid wool. The coat is half lined and bears an early variant 1949 union label.

Sleeve (center of collar to cuff): 36″ (roughly equivalent to a 25″ sleeve)

1960s Custom Inspired blue chesterfield coat

This vintage coat is single breasted and made of blue wool, with a black velvet collar. It has fishmouth lapels and flapped pockets. According to the tag it was “Custom Inspired by the ‘gifted hands’ of master craftsmen”.

1930s-1940s Durolux double breasted overcoat

This vintage coat was made in the early 1940s by the Joseph & Feiss Company under their Clothcraft label from Durolux fabric for the Beck Clothing Company of Jamestown, North Dakota. The coat is dark blue, double breasted, with wide lapels, handwarmer pockets and a plain back. It is half-lined.

1930s Shawl Collar railroad mackinaw coat

This vintage coat is a 1930s railroad mackinaw. It is double breasted, with a shawl collar, belted back, handwarmer pockets and cargo pockets. Because this is a workwear coat, subject to abuse, this style had additional leather reinforcement at the pockets, sleeve bottom and cuffs. As was typical of these early production mackinaw coats, this one is unlined, with taped seams. While the shawl collar mackinaw style goes back to the 1910s, the leather reinforced railroad version didn’t gain popularity until the 1920s. By the early 1940s, production was waning, though old coats of this style continued to be be worn for years, a testament to their durability and warmth.

1930s Hart Schaffner & Marx NRA tagged overcoat

This vintage overcoat was made between 1933 and 1935 by Hart Schaffner & Marx for the Lou Lucke Co. of Havre, Montana. The coat is double breasted, in a blue and gray tweed. It has a pleated back and raglan shoulders. The coat bears a NRA (National Recovery Act) member tag, which dates the coat accurately. Lou Lucke was born in 1874 and operated a mercantile in Havre starting in 1903.

1940s peak lapel brown tweed overcoat

This vintage tweed overcoat was made in the 1940s and was sold by the Van Zandt & Willman Golden Clothes Shop of 6222-24 Halstead Street, Chicago, Illinois. The coat is single breasted, in an oatmeal colored tweed, with peak lapels, belted cuffs and raglan sleeves. It is half-lined, as was typical of overcoats of this period. The coat bears a 1939 Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union label.
