Ralph Lauren Country hunting Norfolk jacket

This jacket was made by Ralph Lauren. It draws its design influence heavily from hunting and outdoor garments of the 1900s-1920s, with its norfolk straps and full attached belt. It has a corduroy collar, ticket pocket, cuff straps, and button on throat latch as well as saddle bag pockets. This was made as part of the Ralph Lauren Country line. As an older piece of Ralph Lauren, this one lists the company as having been established in 1971 as opposed to the back-dated 1967 which newer Ralph Lauren garments do.

Ralph Lauren reproduction 1920s hunting jacket

This hunting jacket was made by Ralph Lauren as part of their now defunct Polo Sportsman line. It is made of brown canvas and is sort of a greatest hits version of 1910s-1930s hunting jackets, drawing mainly from the detailing of Red Head and Duxbak designs. It has a front entry half-moon style game pouch, double breast pocket and double round cargo pockets. The shoulders are reinforced and there is corduroy on the collar and inside the cuffs. The sleeves have double ventilated armpit gussets, the collar has a buttoned throat latch, and the cuffs have a distinctive button closure, which, unlike the rest of the detailing of the coat, I do not recognize.

1920s Duxbak hunting vest

This vintage vest was made in the 1920 by Duxbak in Utica, New York. While it is missing its label, the cut, the construction of the closed bottom shotgun shell loops and the type of buckle used are all unique to Duxbak and makes it easy to identify. The buckle used on the back bears the patent number “819180”, which shows that this buckle design dates from 1906.
The DuxBak line was started in 1906 by Bird, Jones and Kenyon, and had a factory located at 1 Blandina St., Utica, NY. Prior to the 1920s, Duxbak used the slogan “Duxbak Sportsman’s Clothing” in their advertisements and on their tags. During the 1920s, they switched to ” Duxbak Rain Proof Sportsman’s Clothing”. By the 1930s, they had changed their label to include a graphic of a hunter, and to emphasize “Utica”.

1940s Canadian Tropal Coat

This vintage coat was the Canadian version of the English Tropal coat. While the British versions were originally insulated with sheepskin, and later kapok, this is lined with a green pile. The coat is single breasted, with a wide overlap and internal windflap to keep out the harsh North African winds. The oversized collar flips up and latches for extra protection. The buttonholes are leather backed for durability and the collar is wool faced. The lining is removable via Newey snaps.

1920s Drybak hunting jacket

This vintage jacket was made by the Drybak company of Binghamton, New York in the 1920s. It is made of canvas with a corduroy collar and cuff linings. The jacket has reinforced shoulders, a half-moon style front entry game pouch access with scalloped reinforcement stitching, a large flapped breast pocket, and handwarmer pockets which form the pocket flaps for large cargo pockets and shotgun shell pockets. It has combination sleeve panel / ventilated underarm gussets which are unique to Drybak, as well as a flip up ear warmer panel. The buttons are branded Drybak or Money Back and the jacket bears the early style red white and black Drybak tag.

1960s Bob Allen hunting jacket

This vintage jacket was made by Bob Allen Hunting Clothing of Des Moines, Iowa. It is made from Galey and Lord’s Klondike fabric. The jacket has a quilted gun pad on the right shoulder, making this a right handed jacket. The right side of the shirt style corduroy collar snaps down with a Scovill Mfg. Co snap to keep it out of the way. The pockets are all pleated with panels on the sides for expansion. The jacket has a bi-swing back for greater freedom of motion, and the sleeves have shirt style cuffs. The back is belted. The “belt” flips up to reveal buttons which detach the Talon zipper closing game pouch. These buttons are riveted to an internal belt to support the game pouch when it is fully loaded. It’s a really well engineered coat.

This shell vest design changed very little from when it was introduced in the early 1900s until this one was produced. As it was a garment of pure function, it was not beholden to the whims of fashion. A good design was a good design, and they stuck with it. It has loops for 32 shotgun shells, a high buttoning neckline to protect the wearer from the elements, and a buckle back to adjust for a comfortable fit. The buckle used on the back bears the patent number “819180”, which shows that this buckle design dates from 1906. The vest has a six button front, and all the buttons bear the DuxBak name.

1930s National Recovery Act tagged Western Field hunting jacket

This vintage canvas hunting jacket was made by DryBak for Montgomery Ward between 1933 and 1935. It was sold under the Western Field label. The jacket is made from brown canvas with a corduroy collar and cuff linings. The collar has a flip up panel with an elastic strap to keep your ears warm on chilly days. There is a double breast pocket. The jacket has reinforced shoulders and flapped shotgun shell pockets over the roomy cargo pockets. The coat has a buttoned game pocket. The National Recovery Act Cotton Authority tag helps date this coat.

1930s RedHead Brand hunting jacket

This vintage hunting jacket was made by Red Head Brand in the mid 1930s and was sold by the Sportswear department of Marshall Field & Co. It is made of mid-weight canvas, with a corduroy collar and cuff linings. The collar opens with 1906 patent snaps made by the Alma Mfg. Co of Baltimore Maryland to reveal an mid 1930s production pin-lock Talon no.3 fantail zipper. That zipper converts the foldable flat hood, (patent no. 1972585, granted 1934) into a wearable one. The breast pocket has a smaller watch pocket which shares the larger pocket’s flap. There are two rows of pocket flaps, one for large cargo pockets, the other for canvas shotgun shell pockets. There is an internal game pocket (canvas, this jacket was made prior to rubberization of game pockets becoming the norm) which has hook closures to open and close it. Access to the game pocket is through flaps on the sides. There are ventilation grommets at the armpits.

1930s RedHead Brand hunting jacket

This vintage canvas hunting jacket was made in the mid 1930s by Red Head Brand. It features a variant of their makers label used in the 1930s-early 1940s. The jacket is made of a double layer of canvas, with an internal game pocket The collar and cuffs are corduroy, and the shoulders have additional reinforcement. The collar has an internal wool lined hood, with a hookless style Talon zipper on the collar and an early sunburst variant of the bell-shaped Talon on the split hood. The hip cargo pockets have shotgun shell loops above with their own dedicated pocket flaps. The breast pocket combines a watch pocket and a cigarette pocket, again under the same flap. There are grommet ventilated underarm gussets for freedom of motion, and a button on chin-strap under the collar.
