Stratton Milan Fedora

Now on eBay!  LINK

This hat was made by Stratton hats of Chicago, IL.  They make the majority of uniform hats in the USA.  This one is made of extremely tough, high quality milan straw.  It has a tall crown and wide brim, and is creased with a teardrop crown with front pinches.  The sweatband is cloth.  The hat has heavy fading from sun exposure on the top of the brim and the crown.  Stratton makes a good sturdy hat, and while the fading probably prevents this from being worn in a dressier context, it will take just about anything you can throw at it and be fine.Size: 7-3/8Brim Width: 3″Crown Height: 6″    Photobucket

Half and half straw workwear fedora

Now on eBay!  LINK

This is a really unusual hat.  The crown is made out of a fine weave straw with ventilation.  It looks like it was woven in flat sheets on a loom as opposed to traditional panama weaving, however.  It is cut and stitched in four panels to form the crown.  The are two ventilation grommets in either side of the crown.  It is blocked with a teardrop crease.  The brim is heavy canvas, spiral stitched for added rigidity, with a bound edge.  The sweatband is fabric. Size: 6-3/4Brim Width: 2-3/4″Ribbon Width: 1-1/8″    Photobucket

Bangora Fedora

Now on eBay!  LINK

This vintage fedora was made in the 1940s.  It was an inexpensive summer straw at the time, but of surprisingly nice quality.  This is the kind of hat which simply does not survive.  Like vintage eight panel caps, they were meant to be worn for a season or two and then replaced.  It features classic fedora styling, with a diamond ventilation pattern in the side of the crown reminiscent of that found on Stetson Playboys of this time frame.  The weave of the straw is extremely fine.  The hat has darkening due to age, and the band has fading. The sweatband is hard, but still perfectly in-tact and not warped.Size: 6-3/4Brim Width: 2-3/4″Band Width: 1-3/4″    Photobucket

Color and Pattern Coordination

Blue striped suiting, gray felt hat with black band, black shoes, contrasting tie. Conservative 1930s attire.

A wild brown tweed like this calls for brown shoes and a brown hat. Both the shoes and the hat have good chunky proportions, going with the boldness of the tweed. The blue tie harmonizes with the blue overcheck. Keep the tie pattern small so that it does not compete with the tweed. A ’40s country look.

Blue houndstooth with a bit of reddish brown in it. Brown shoes. Brown hat, with a reddish band. Red tie. Early ’60s out and about.

Bossay Open Road fedora

This vintage fedora was made in the 1950s by the Bossay Hat Company of Pampa, Texas.  It conforms closely to the lines of the Open Road or Stratoliner style, with fedora blocking and flanging, a thin ribbon with a western style bow and thin binding  It is creased with a teardrop crown.  There is a wind string and button.  There are several stains to the felt, and the sweatband has hardened and has cracking. It is interesting to note that the sweatband is unreeed and has a taped rear sweatband seam, something which by the time frame this hat was made had largely been abandoned by the larger makers.

Portis 15 cowboy hat

Now on eBay! LINK

This hat was made in the 1950s by Portis.  It sold new in the 1950s for $15, which bought a high quality hat at the time.  It is marked 2X beaver, but the X system is meaningless, as it varies manufacturer to manufacturer and year to year- that is to say, a vintage 2X by one manufacturer could be the same quality as a vintage 5X by a different manufacturer as a 30X by a modern manufacturer.  It has Portis’s Swans Down finish.  It has a high quality leather sweatband with a backing membrane to stop perspiration from staining the felt.  It has a relatively low crown, which is creased in a fedora style diamond crease.  It has a three cord ribbon with a fancy bow.  Very nicely done trimming on this one.Size: 7-1/8Brim Width: 3-1/4″Crown Height: 5-1/4″Ribbon Width: 3/8″

Eddy Brothers Cowboy Hat

Now on eBay! LINK

This vintage cowboy hat was made in the 1960s by Eddy brothers of California.  It is marked a 5X beaver quality.  The X system is, unfortunately entirely meaningless, as it differs wildly manufacturer to manufacturer, model to model and year to year.  It is marked “water repellent” and has a red liner.  The felt has stains, pen marks, a few small moth bites, and it looks like someone had a pin in the front of the crown.  It has a two cord band, a flat brim and a cattleman’s crease.

Size: 7-1/8
Brim Width: 3″
Band Width: 1/4″
